I don’t like doing menial tasks, so I often find myself automating things. It usually turns out that it would have been quicker to just do the menial task, but I digress. Below are some quick automation projects that I used to pass the time during lockdown.
COVID-19 Vaccination Appointment Bot
In the spring of 2021 when vaccines were first starting to become available, I was eager to help my parents find an available appointment once they became eligible. I created a short script to crawl the New York State Vaccine website for our county and signed up for a free Twilio account to send me texts and also send my parents emails upon the discovery of an open vaccine slot.
DailyChecker Bot
During my senior year at Cornell, Covid was in full effect. We were required to fill out a “daily check” form every single day, regardless of whether we had in-person classes or not. The questions were the same every single day and although it only took a few minutes to complete, it was tiresome, especially since I seldom went on campus those semesters. So I decided to make a script that would sign in and complete the form for me every single day, at a random time during the morning, and then text me once it was finished for the day. Again, I used selenium and the free Twilio trial account I had set up to send the text messages.
